Happy Trails: Walks Around Dana Point
There’s nothing better than connecting with nature on a scenic hike or walk. Between its roaming hills, picturesque coastline, and quaint downtown, Dana Point is brimming with prime walking trails and paths. Whether you’re in need of a clear head or just trying to get your steps, the spots below are some of our favorites in town.
Dana Point Headlands
Home to over 150 species of native plants and animals, Dana Point Headlands is a dream come true for nature lovers, joggers, and everyone in between. Over three miles in length, follow the greenbelt and gaze upon the coastal bluffs that Dana Point is known for. This trail also offers public beach access that brings its guests down to the tides to further admire the living creatures who call OC their home.
Salt Creek Trail
Grab some tennis shoes and your four-legged friend because Salt Creek Trail will be your next go-to spot. Connecting two major city parks, Crown Valley Community Park and Laguna Niguel Regional Park, this hiking haven is the longest trail in all of Dana Point. With beach access and an attached dog park, there’s little to wonder why this six-mile trail is one of OC’s not-to-be-missed hikes.
Dana Point Harbor and Island
For a view of the countless boats that call the harbor home, there is nothing better than a relaxing walk around the Dana Point Harbor. Start at the Ocean Institute and wind you way past Baby Beach, cross over the bridge to the harbor island and admire the peacefulness of this stretch of water between land and the jetty buffering the ocean’s waves on the opposite side.
Harbor Bluff Trail
Overlooking the cliffside, take a stroll at Harbor Bluff Trail for stunning views of the Dana Point Harbor. Only mapping out a quarter mile, this historical walk offers photogenic views without the tiresome hike. Watch the cotton-candy sunset at one of their several concrete benches with dinner or a coffee that you can purchase just a few blocks away. Easy peasy!
Creekside Park to Doheny Beach
The San Juan Capistrano Creek Trail is mellow and flat and perfect for those who want a leisurely stroll or to get in some serious steps. Located alongside the San Juan Creek River, this trail is prime for those of us who prefer to bring our bikes rather than walk the route. With the trail eventually connecting to the sandy shores of Dana Point, this trail is ideal for packing a picnic basket and riding down for a delicious spread on a beach blanket while enjoying the ocean views. A great place to see shorebirds and other wildlife along the creek, be on the lookout!
Strands Beach
Strands might be famous for its beach-goers and boogie boarders, but it’s also an excellent place to wind down and get in some steps. Over a million people visit Strands Beach every year. With spectacular views of the coastline and cliffs, it’s no surprise this trail is popular all year round. Enjoy the boardwalk and concrete path that overlook the ocean for a birds eye view of our coastal paradise!
