Day at the Dana Point Harbor - Itinerary 2

Dana Point Days | Day at the Dana Point Harbor | Jetty

Welcome back to our second installment of a “Day at the Dana Point Harbor.” In this feature we’ll start the day by getting on our zen, venturing out onto the water and treating ourselves to some tasty eats and a little shopping. The harbor is changing, and development has started on the parking lot with some of the shops and restaurants closed in preparation for new merchants and retail. In the meantime, please support those remaining in their original spots…some to stay, some to possibly move locations…we shall see.

Down Dog Your Way into the Day

Start your day with a sense of balance and tranquility at iHeart Yoga. Nestled in the heart of the Dana Point Harbor, this welcoming studio offers a sanctuary for both seasoned yogis and beginners alike. With a variety of classes tailored to meet every need, from gentle flows to dynamic vinyasa, iHeart provides the perfect space to center your mind, strengthen your body, and cultivate inner peace. Whether you're seeking to increase flexibility, reduce stress, or simply get your heart pumping at one of their always-packed Cardio Sculpt classes, iHeart has been my favorite yoga studio, hands down, for years. Their teachers are phenomenal, the studio vibe is warm and relaxing, and you are guaranteed to feel energized and zen (all at the same time), upon leaving your class. Show up a little early if you’d like to check out their cute shop in the lobby full of fun activewear, loungewear, beautiful dresses and more. For schedule and more, click here: www.iheartyoga.org

Ocean Lovers Head to the Ocean Institute

Established in 1977 as the Orange County Marine Institute, the Ocean Institute aims to ignite an insightful dedication to education through a diverse range of programs, including field trips, virtual learning experiences, whale and marine life tours; and other engaging and interactive activities for visitors of all ages. Renowned for its exceptional hands-on marine science education, the award-winning Ocean Institute ensures that visitors have a memorable and eye-opening experience, while fostering a sense of wonder and discovery. Make sure to check their website for general public hours, information and more: www.oceaninstitute.org

Pack a Picnic for a Relaxed Lunch

There is something about eating a peaceful lunch directly on the water that just makes everything taste better. A great spot is over the Island Way bridge (and pictured below), where picnic tables periodically line the shore across from the jetty. You will often see groups of friends and families gathered on a nice day, enjoying the sunshine and views of the water, sailboats and paddleboarders.

Hit the Water with Westwind or Aventura

After lunch, why not get out on the water and pick up a new skill? Care to give sailing a try? SUP or kayaking more your thing? Two harbor favorites include Westwind Sailing (right next to Baby Beach) and Aventura Sailing Academy, on the other side of the Island Way harbor bridge.

In operation since 1976, Aventura Sailing is an award-winning Professional Certification Facility of American Sailing. Their academy offers all ASA certifications with a classroom that overlooks our beautiful harbor. This renowned sailing school provides comprehensive instruction ranging from beginning to advanced levels, ensuring a thorough understanding of sailing principles, safety protocols and hands-on navigation techniques. Their seasoned instructions are committed to fostering a safe and engaging learning environment while keeping things fun. In addition, Aventura offers yacht charters, kayak/paddleboards rentals and more. Visit them here: www.aventurasailing.com

Westwind Sailing opened in 1987 to provide public access boating instruction to the local community and beyond. Their award-winning sailing center offers all sorts of adult and kid classes in private and/or semi-private settings for those looking to get out on the water for the first time or refresh their sailing skills. Camps and rentals such as SUP and kayaks are available daily throughout the year as well. For a listing of classes and more, click here: westwindsailing.com

Browse a Few Shops

Shopping at the harbor makes for a fun break in the day, especially when you visit unique stores like the Woody Hut, Golden Galleon Boutique, and Vintage Yacht Club. The Woody Hut captures the essence of beach life with its collection of surf-inspired apparel and gifts, unique accessories, and quirky coastal décor. At the Golden Galleon Boutique, where the vibe is “Southern California casual” you'll find an array of women’s contemporary fashion, shoes, jewelry, and keepsakes while the Vintage Yacht Club takes you back in time with its curated collection of maritime antiques and vintage items, offering a nostalgic shopping experience. Each of these charming shops provides a distinctive shopping experience that perfectly complements the coastal charm of the harbor.

Happy Hour Wine Stop

After a bit of shopping, looking for a casual and relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a glass of wine after a day of harbor fun? Step in to Frisby Wine Cellars for a glass of red or white at their Dana Point tasting room. Started in 2008 by John Frisby, Frisby Winery produces beautifully crafted wines from the Paso Robles area where they bottle over 2,000 cases of wine. Their Dana Point Harbor location is open seven days a week for tasting flights, wine by the glass, craft beer (if wine isn’t your thing) and light bites! Grab a seat at their outdoor patio and enjoy a glass with a water view. www.frisbycellars.com

Taste the Sea

For a casual and delicious dining experience in Dana Point Harbor, head to Jon's Fish Market. This local favorite offers fresh, mouth-watering seafood in a laid-back setting. Whether you're craving a classic fish and chips, a hearty clam chowder, or the catch of the day, Jon's serves it up with friendly service and a relaxed vibe. Snag a seat on the outdoor patio while savoring the flavors of the ocean at this local seafood spot. Find the menu here: www.jonsfish.hrpos.heartland.us/menu

Sunset Views

One of my favorite ways to end the day at the harbor is with a stunning sunset. You can enjoy golden hour by walking out to the benches behind the Ocean Institute or head over the Island Way bridge to the other side of the harbor, for views along the jetty of the sun dipping below the horizon. The vibrant colors reflecting off the water are peaceful and mesmerizing all at once.

Dana Point Harbor offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether you're looking to explore the ocean, indulge in some tasty eats, or simply relax by the water, our quaint and charming harbor has you covered. It’s one of my favorite places to unwind and take in the views, smell the salty sea air and feel a sense of gratitude for this beautiful place we get to call home. As mentioned above, it’s undergoing an extensive renovation so we will definitely have more updates as things progress and new and old favorites set up shop.
