A Whale of a Festival
March is almost here and for Dana Point that means it’s time for one of its most beloved festivals and events - the annual Festival of the Whales. This coastal celebration, which has been captivating locals and visitors alike since 1972, pays homage to the majestic gray whales as they migrate along the Pacific coast and is one of the longest-running whale festivals in the United States. It’s an unforgettable event with marine-themed activities, live music, conservation talks, art exhibits, delicious food and fun for attendees of all ages.
This year’s festival takes place March 1st - 3rd down at the Dana Point Harbor. Dive in and discover some of the weekend events!
Opening Ceremony
Date: Friday, March 1st
Time: 5-8 PM
Location: 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr
Details: Join in the welcoming opening ceremony by members of the local Acjachemen Nation, which is guaranteed to set the tone for a weekend filled with excitement and wonder. Join local dignitaries, marine enthusiasts, and fellow festival-goers as Dana Point officially kicks off this year’s festival. Following the beach ceremony, a reception will be held inside the Ocean Institute. Please note, this is a RSVP event.
Festival of Whales Magical Migration Parade
Dates: March 2nd
Times: 10-11 AM
Location: Island Way and along Dana Point Harbor Drive
Details: Who doesn’t love a parade? Especially when there are giant whale floats? This year’s parade route starts at the Richard Henry Dana statue on the Island Way Bridge and proceeds over the bridge, then right on Dana Point Harbor Dr. and continues until it ends at Golden Lantern. The parade can be viewed from sections of the Island Way Bridge and along Dana Point Harbor Dr.
Cardboard Classic & Dinghy Dash

Location: 34451 Ensenada Pl, Baby Beach
Details: Imagine a race where the vehicles are made entirely of cardboard and duct tape, yet the excitement and competitiveness rival that of any high-speed contest. Welcome to the Cardboard Classic, where participants transform humble materials into imaginative vessels, ready to navigate the waters of Dana Point Harbor. Cheer on your favorite competitors at this fun-filled event.
Whales, Tails & Ales

Location: Main Parking Lot, corner of Dana Point Harbor Drive & Golden Lantern
Details: This event brings together the best of both worlds, offering attendees a unique opportunity to learn about marine life conservation efforts while enjoying a selection of locally crafted ales—all against the picturesque backdrop of Dana Point Harbor. As the name suggest, your four-legged friends are welcome to join in the fun!
Wyland Art Lessons in the Wild - On the Water

Details: During the Wyland Art Lessons in the Wild - On the Water event, participants will have the opportunity to create their own masterpiece inspired by the natural beauty of the ocean and its inhabitants while on board one of Dana Wharf’s vessels. Whether you're a seasoned artist or picking up a paintbrush for the first time, Wyland's expert instruction and encouragement will guide you through the process, allowing your creativity to flow freely. This 45-minute adventure includes VIP boarding, a presentation, and an exclusive art lesson before the Whale Watching Trip, via video feed on the vessel, by renowned environmental artist, Wyland.
Clam Chowder Cook-Off

Details: Satisfy your taste buds at the Chowder Cook-Off, where local chefs compete for the title of Best Chowder in Dana Point. Sample an assortment of delectable chowders and vote for your favorite, all while enjoying stunning views of the harbor. This year’s participating restaurants include: Brio Tuscany Grille, Chart House, Coastal Kitchen, Dana Point Yacht Club, Jimmy's Famous American Tavern, Jon's Fish Market, RJ's Cafe, The Shwack, Trevor's at the Tracks, Tutor & Spunky's, What a Dish, Wind & Sea Restaurant and Whitestone.
Stand Up to Trash Beach Cleanup

Little Pirates Treasure Hunt
